Of Gods and Men (Des hommes et des dieux)

7pm Sunday 8th January 2012

Dir. Xavier Beauvois / 2010 / Lang: Arab/Fr- subtls | 122 mins | 15

Eight French Christian monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers in a monastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps though the region. The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse. Should they leave? Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay... come what may. Loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996.

The Reading Room Centennial cake!!

The centenary event was a great success with a steady stream of visitors throughout the day.

The highlight was the delicious Green Hut cake below created by local artist Maggie Tebb. See the article from the Gazette & Herald.

There was an excellent display from the Appleton history society based on findings from the recently released 1911 census. More reading material was available on tables to accompany  a cup of tea. This included a copy of The Times from 1911 and a centenary edition facsimile of Womans Weekly originally published in 1911.

On the walls were large prints from the original Reading room minutes book listing the items donated by villagers. Also on show was a poster (above) listing local, national and international events in 1911. Click on full screen for a large view.
